Reflection #1

Hi there, my name is Jessica Hicks. I am from Boerne Texas (pronounced Burn-ie). My major is Early Education through 6th grade. The reason why I thought Angelo State University would be the best University for me is that I believed that I would be the best transition from Boerne to a different city. Another reason is that at ASU you are not just another number, you are actually a living, breathing human being. I believe that ASU was right choice in school for me. I have a lot of reasons of why I want to become a teacher. I had a number of great teachers throughout the past years, and they have inspired me to become a teacher. I believe the one teacher that inspired me the most would be my 8th grade American History Teacher; he was also my Basketball coach as well. He brought history to life. He would dress up as important characters in Americas’ history such as Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. He also let his students live in the past by performing the reenactment of the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington.
In this course I would like to learn how to incorporate technology into lessons, and be able to make lessons filled with technology so that my future students can benefit from my lessons. Technology has changed a great amount since I have been elementary school. I remember in high school we received the Smart boards I thought they were the coolest things ever.

  1. I really like your pictures. They represent the fun and outdoorsy side of you. I am also a fan of ASU for the same reason. I transferred from UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage). It was beautiful, but after going there for two years I barely knew anyone. I have been going to ASU for two years and it has been the complete opposite. Everyone here is so nice and really.

  2. Jessica,
Not being just a number in a classroom was another huge reason I wanted to come to ASU. I love that we can actually talk to the professors one-on-one after class and they even know our names. I don't know what it is about history teachers, but I had a history teacher in high school as well who inspired me. Everyday he would get so excited to get up and teach us history. It made me want to learn even more and made class super fun. Have a great semester.

  3. Jessica,
Your 8th grade history teacher sounds AMAZING!!! I wish I would have had a teacher like that during school, none of my teachers dressed up. I'm so glad you brought up when the Smart Boards first came out, it helped me remember when I first saw them in my classes. I was in 9th grade, it was a Geography class, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Although my teacher made fun of it saying it wasn't that smart because she would switch the marker colors and so when you picked them up it still did the original color since it was sensor based. It was so funny! Hope you have a great semester!

  4. Hi Jessica,
Glad to have you in ED2323. I think it's great that you picked ASU from all the rest. ASU is known for many things. The College of Education has superb programs that prepares candidates to be successful and effective teachers. I'm positive you will learn several ways to integrate technology in the classroom from this course. Have a great semester!
